In January, our Pumpkin class enjoyed a special activity connected to Japanese New Year traditions — making their very own kites! Flying kites is a beloved New Year custom in Japan, symbolizing fresh beginnings, strength, and wishes carried into the year ahead.

1月、パンプキンズクラスでは、日本のお正月文化にちなんだ特別な活動として「たこ作り」を行いました。
たこ揚げは、新しい年の始まりや健やかな成長、願いを空へ届ける意味が込められた、日本の伝統的なお正月遊びです。

The children used recycled plastic bags to create their kites and decorated them with their favourite stickers. Each kite became a unique reflection of the child who made it, and the children were proud to show off their colorful designs.

子どもたちは、リサイクルのビニール袋を使ってたこを作り、お気に入りのステッカーで自由に飾り付けをしました。
一つひとつのたこが、その子らしさあふれる作品となり、完成したたこを嬉しそうに見せてくれました。

Since then, the Pumpkins have been bringing their kites to the nearby park, running as fast as they can and laughing as they try to make them fly higher and higher. Watching their excitement as the kites lift into the air has been a joyful experience for everyone.

その後は、近くの公園へたこを持って出かけ、元気いっぱい走りながら、できるだけ高く飛ばそうと挑戦しています。
たこが風に乗って空に浮かぶたび、子どもたちの笑顔と歓声が広がります。

These playful moments also connect naturally to simple science learning. Through hands-on experience, the children begin to notice the effects of wind, movement, and space — discovering that running faster or feeling the breeze helps their kites fly. This curiosity and exploration link closely to the IB PYP approach, encouraging children to observe, experiment, and learn through play.

風の強さや走る速さによってたこが浮かぶことに気づき、体験を通して自然に「なぜ？」を感じ始めています。
この探究心は、観察・実験・遊びを大切にするIB PYPの学びへとつながっていきます。

As we step into the new year, these kite-flying adventures remind us of the joy of movement, creativity, and discovery — and of how meaningful learning can begin with something as simple as a child running freely under the open sky.

新しい年の始まりに、たこ揚げを通して感じた「動く楽しさ」「作る喜び」「発見するワクワク」。
青空の下で思いきり走る子どもたちの姿は、学びの原点を改めて感じさせてくれました。
